Little more than ramshackle stone towers with cellar-space for a handful of local farmers and three or four arrow-slits, Standholdings are a familiar feature all across the wilds. After all, there are many lonely spots where no Tiefling gentry or Knightly Orders hold influence or offer protection. Standholding guardsmen, who occupy the towers (some stand unoccupied, however), are really the bottom-rung of the mercenary profession. Most such guardsmen are aging semi-skilled bachelors with no prospects elsewhere. In return for a share of local produce, they maintain the solitary towers, and offer at least notional protection in the wilds. Now and then a Dragonborn Knight moves into a district and takes over the Standholding- in such an instance the guardsmen are brought into line or ‘retired’. Such intervention is rare though, only occurring in areas of growing population where a Knight will not disgrace himself by choosing to settle there.
